The Challenger staircase is a popular choice for its contemporary styling and is often referred to as the Zig-Zag staircase. The steel strings are slim and subtle, cleverly designed with the treads fixed neatly between the strings.

Challenger

If your looking for a modern feature staircase the Challenger is the perfect choice. This Zig Zag stair is an architectural masterpiece in any home. It is also a great choice of stair for commercial offices and retail environments.

This bespoke design can incorporate curves, kites and winders.

Two single flat steel strings are fixed either side of the treads. Strings can doubled up to sandwich a glass balustrade with hidden fixings. We laser cut steel for precision fabrication.

The steel strings can be twisted to create a double turn S shape staircase or a Helical staircase.

Materials & Finishes

The strings can also be made from Stainless Steel, Galvanized Steel, Corten Steel and Oiled Steel. All the steel components are available in any colour and can offer a contrast to the chosen wooden treads.

Treads are made from a variety of hardwoods: Ash, Birch, Oak, Mahogany, Teak or Walnut. Natural woods are chosen for their strength and durability and can be stained or painted to any colour of your choice. We offer an extensive selection of stains and painted finishes which provide a durable finish, whilst still retaining the unique, natural properties of the wood. This staircase can also be specified to have treads in Steel, Tile, Concrete, Carpet, Vinyl, or Composite Decking.

Our standard thickness of wood treads are 40mm, we also offer thicker chunkier treads as an option. Open risers look superb on this staircase but we can offer closed risers if required. Treads are fixed between the strings on the top of lugs, if treads are over 60mm thickness these can be hidden with seamless covers and not visible from underneath the stair.

Glass balustrades are a popular choice with this style to emphasise the floating staircase effect and a contemporary look.Glass balustrades are fixed to the external side to the string with stainless steel button fixings; these buttons can also be painted in any RAL colour of your choice. As an option, for an invisible look with clean lines, the glass balustrades can be sandwiched between a double skinned string with concealed fixings.

Spindles, railings and tensioned wires are available to suit your design requirements. We can colour match to the steel string or timber treads.

Choose from a variety of handrail designs, in natural woods or steel to match or contrast with your treads and to add a finishing touch to your stair design.

Sizes

Our standard door leaf sizes range between: 1981mm - 2500mm height, 626mm -1026mm width. Made to Measure door leaf sizes are up to: 2900mm height, 1300mm width. Please ask for more details: info@zakuna.co.uk

Fire Door Options

Zakuna doors can be manufactured with FD30 or FD60 cores. As well as smoke seals, thresholds and intumescent strips installed within the door where necessary. If you require a self-closer for FD30S and FD60S, our hidden hinges can be upgraded to have a hidden self-closing mechanism within the frame and door, with no visible difference to our standard hidden hinges.

Door leaf thickness for Fire Rated Doors are 45mm for FD30, 52mm for FD60.

Installation

Our Pre-hung Interior Door Sets are easy to install, reducing labour, time and cost on site, in comparison to tradition methods. Door leaves, frames, linings and architraves are unassembled and supplied loose for on-site assembly. Installation instructions, fittings and fixings are provided. Our recommended consumables can be supplied as an option. We also offer a full installation service.

This includes consultation to determine the design and specification to suit your requirements and budget. Our aim is to make the entire process as simple and practical as possible, offering a site survey and solutions to the challenges presented by complex design issues, building regulations and installation systems.
