Contender
Our Contender Staircase is by far, our most popular metal staircase. Its modern design, central stringer, clean lines and glass balustrades will add a contemporary feel to any hallway, creating a dramatic and stylish effect. Winner of ‘Best Joinery Product’ Build It Awards in 2018, the Contender Staircase claimed first place due to its versatility and ingenious design.
Our Contender is expertly engineered to being a self supporting structure made with a central box string which can be fabricated from wood or steel. In comparison to our slimmer central string Hansa stair, the Contender can be configured with kites and winders, allowing it to twist and turn in every direction, even to create helical stairs or a curved central spine staircase.
Laser cut steel for accurate fabrication, the central steel spine is folded to create a box structure, fixed to the floor and ceiling from inside the string, so there is no visible footplate, and the last riser is covered. Its hollow section enables us to hide the wiring looms for LED lights within the string itself.
The central spine is typically a 300 x 300mm cross section on a 1000mm wide stair, this enables the string to support the treads without the need for additional tread support.

This staircase is a great alternative to the Cantilever Stair as you can create a floating effect staircase without the complex issues of a two stage installation or the necessity of a suitably strengthened side wall.
We have used the Contenders' design principles to develop similar styles such as the Dutchman and Fireball.
Materials & Finishes
Treads are made from a variety of hardwoods: Ash, Birch, Oak, Mahogany, Teak or Walnut. Natural woods are chosen for their strength and durability and can be stained or painted to any colour of your choice. We offer an extensive selection of stains and painted finishes which provide a durable finish, whilst still retaining the unique, natural properties of the wood.
In addition to wooden treads, we can also offer variations such steel grids and tread pans that can be filled with concrete or clad in tiles to suit any style of interior or exterior central spine stair.
For an open rise staircase, building regulations require the gap between treads to be less than 100mm. Therefore, a 40mm thickness tread will require a step nose. We also offer thicker tread options.
Glass balustrades are a popular choice with this style to create the floating staircase effect and a contemporary look. Spindles, railings and tensioned wires are available to suit your design requirements. We can colour match to the steel string or timber treads.
Choose from a variety of handrail designs, in natural woods or steel to match or contrast with your treads and to add a finishing touch to your stair design.
Sizes
Our standard door leaf sizes range between: 1981mm - 2500mm height, 626mm -1026mm width. Made to Measure door leaf sizes are up to: 2900mm height, 1300mm width. Please ask for more details: info@zakuna.co.uk
Fire Door Options
Zakuna doors can be manufactured with FD30 or FD60 cores. As well as smoke seals, thresholds and intumescent strips installed within the door where necessary. If you require a self-closer for FD30S and FD60S, our hidden hinges can be upgraded to have a hidden self-closing mechanism within the frame and door, with no visible difference to our standard hidden hinges.
Door leaf thickness for Fire Rated Doors are 45mm for FD30, 52mm for FD60.
Installation
Our Pre-hung Interior Door Sets are easy to install, reducing labour, time and cost on site, in comparison to tradition methods. Door leaves, frames, linings and architraves are unassembled and supplied loose for on-site assembly. Installation instructions, fittings and fixings are provided. Our recommended consumables can be supplied as an option. We also offer a full installation service.
From Design to Installation
We work closely with customers, interior designers, architects and contractors to provide a fully bespoke service. This includes consultation to determine the design and specification to suit your requirements and budget. Our aim is to make the entire process as simple and practical as possible, offering a site survey and solutions to the challenges presented by complex design issues, building regulations and installation systems. Our windows bear the CE mark and correspond with the highest standards for thermal efficiency, weathering, acoustic performance and security. Environmentally friendly materials are used in manufacturing including FCS certified timber and water based paints for finishing.
All windows are covered by warranty for up to 10 years from the date of delivery. Full details of window specification can be supplied on request.
